(Mostly resolved) Thought Leader Global: Mailing a pure spamtrap – smells of Marcus Evans

Thought Leader Global started spamming an address that is a dead giveaway for Marcus Evans-ness. The ESP is emailIQ, a service of Kinexus Internet.

I reported the matter to emailIQ, and they responded that they have told the customer to remove the address (which I didn’t identify, but as there was, apparently, only one, it was easy enough) and have also added the domain to their global suppression list, which I suppose resolves the problem as far as receiving any more goes.

What worries me is that apparently, this email address was added in a manner that satisfies our AUP. For your information, this email address has been on our system for a considerable time now and has been emailed on a number of occasions without cause for concern, this being the first reported issue.

This is the first time I hear of either Thought Leader Global or emailIQ during my tenancy of the domain, which spans December 29, 2009 to the present.  I asked for a specific timeline, but was told that is customer confidential information.

Now I got curious as to the AUP.  Here’s the Terms and Conditions as linked to from www.emailiq.com’s front page (link at the very bottom), which looks all right – except for the minor fact that the relevant point (Item 7(iii)) refers to an Anti-Spam Policy, which is nowhere to be found on the site.  The item does state that the user specifically agrees not to use the Services: (iii) To send email to any party who has not given their permission to receive email from the User. Now given that the email address in question is a misspelling of somebody’s name, cannot have existed during the previous owner’s tenancy, cannot have received a confirmed opt-in request, etc yadda yadda, I would be very curious indeed as to how it granted permission to be mailed and hence was added in a manner that satisfies the ESP’s AUP.

The content of the message, as well as the specific target address, suggest that Thought Leader Global is somehow in cahoots with Marcus Evans.  I have no way to verify, but the only messages the address has ever seen otherwise were all from Marcus Evans.  It’s not even getting the usual mix of Viagra/Rolex/Russian wives bot-spam that every other outdated address at the domain gets.
