Westfield Hawthorn: Inviting a Dead Email Address to a Hannukah Celebration
Westfield, the UK-based owner of shopping malls that has been reported here before for sending unsolicited bulk email, is now emailing a different spamtrap, inviting it to a Hannukah celebration. As before, the ESP is Responsys.
All of the Westfield mailings that I have seen so far contain a disclaimer at the bottom that indicates that recipients either signed up to receive the email *OR* participated in a Westfield promotion. Automatically collecting and sending bulk email to email addresses that a user must provide to gain something that they want, such as to take advantage of a promotion, is an excellent inducement for users to give email addresses that aren’t theirs. If a company runs this sort of promotion, it really needs to confirm those email addresses. Otherwise it will inevitably have a dirty list with lots of non-opted-in email addresses on it.
