MainSleaze

This is so far off the scale of mainsleaze it’s questionable if it bears to be mentioned here. But it was sent through a legitimate ESP (Sendgrid), and there appears to be a connection to a legitimate Finnish business, however concealed.

Somebody calling itself Suomen Yrittäjäpalvelut, with the domain name yrittajapalvelut.net (registered to “Rafizel Ltd”, apparently of Limassol, Cyprus) is spamming all and sundry, at least addresses obtained from the Finnish Business Information System. Some of the addresses involved constitute personal information (being of the form “firstname.name@domain.example”), and are outdated and erroneous.

A google search of “Rafizel Limassol” indicates they own some other Finnish domains too: etukirje.net, etuklubi.net, and one other that is clearly related to the same purpose, “fabolousoffers.com” – all to do with letters and clubs regarding extra special fancy offers nobody wants, and all hosted at the same Finnish provider.

The spam advertises electronic cigarette replacements. Everything about the spam is Finnish, the domain name (“entrepreneur services”), the apparent sender name (“Finnish Entrepreneur Services”), the spam-advertised web site (www.kansantukku.fi – “the people’s wholesaler”), the body text of the spam, the hosting and DNS service provider of the spam-advertised service.

Suomen Yrittäjäpalvelut does not exist in the Finnish Business Information System, not as a primary business name, not as a d/b/a of anybody else.

The mail says the address register they used to send this is the customer file of tarjousklubi.com and their collaborators.  That domain name is not even registered, so how could that indication possibly meet the requirements of Section 25 of the Personal Data Act when the initiator and/or beneficiary of the mailing are not identified and are in fact completely misrepresented?

The footer of the mail indicates the party behind this is Suomen Yrittäjäpalvelut, apparently of Rantakatu, 65100 Vaasa. Now it happens that Rantakatu in Vaasa is about a mile long, there’s quite a few buildings on it, and you need at least a house number to identify where to go. At least if the d/b/a you give does not exist…

The spam-advertised domain name kansantukku.fi is owned by Suomen Mediatoimisto Oy, who just so happen to reside at Rantakatu 2 G 9, 65100 Vaasa.  The website indicates it is operated by Kansantukku Oy, another business that resides in the same address.  According to the financial information available for free at Yritystele.fi, at least one person is involved in both, but since the Data Protection Ombudsman takes a dim view of anybody naming anybody else on a blog, let it be said that the information is there for anybody to find.  But none of these, businesses or individuals, are identified in the message; I believe this violates Section 28 of the Act on the Protection of Privacy in Electronic Communications, which require that the sender and beneficiary be clearly identifiable in a marketing message.
