I’ve known of plenty of cases where people claim academic degrees or honors that they do not hold. <wry grin> However, email that is sent to your email address when you didn’t ask for it, *and* that addresses you as “Dr.” when you aren’t, is doubly suspicious.
Ah…. Atro emailed me, and apparently within that particular academic circle *everybody* uses Dr. or another academic title. Maybe that’s one of those differences between the west coast of the U.S. and northern Europe; even in these days of globalism there are such differences.
Which puts us back to the actual issue: this company is apparently scraping web sites which offer academic papers, or obtaining email addresses included with academic papers, putting them on a list, and sending them unsolicited bulk email. That’s no more acceptable than any other type of web scraping or list purchase.
