Victoria’s Secret: A New Perfume Collection for a Spamtrap?
U.S. women’s intimate apparel boutique Victoria’s Secret is once again sending email advertisements to one of my spamtraps. This follows a somewhat more serious spam outbreak from this company in late summer, when they hit a number of my spamtraps. At the time I did not blog about it because Spamhaus listed them. (I usually try to warn companies about spam before it gets to that point.) The ESP is Cheetahmail, a subsidiary of Experian.
This particular spamtrap could be the result of a typo. Victoria’s Secret, like many retailers, asks for customer email addresses at the cash register. When a customer complies, the clerk must then type in the email address. Mistakes are extremely common with this process. I strongly recommend confirmed opt-in for email addresses gathered at points-of-sale to prevent reputation damage and possible blocklistings because of spamtrap hits due to bad data gathered at points-of-sale.

Thank you so much for making us aware of this errant email. We take these matters very seriously, and after investigating this issue we have realized that there was an error in the list that was pulled for this mailing that day. We are putting additional steps into the process to avoid this happening again in the future
Excellent. 🙂 I checked, though, and the spamtrap that they hit this time hadn’t been hit before. So please warn them about issues with data gathered at points-of-sale!
