VWR International Oy: Selling …what? to spamtraps and scientists

VWR International Oy (see biz reg), d/b/a Kebo Lab, the Finnish branch of VWR International LLC, is spamming, and doing it on their own.

Recipients (the ones that aren’t ancient spamtraps, but currently active email addresses with real owners) say they don’t even get what it is that the spam is supposed to be selling, and that they have zero recollection of any transactions between VWR and themselves, and zero probability of having given consent to VWR to send marketing materials.

This doesn’t seem to be a case of PubMed spamming, which would have seemed like a logical explanation given the sender’s line of business. My PubMed traps didn’t get it, but addresses in the same trap group that aren’t in PubMed did.

The original was sent two weeks ago. A reminder spam was sent today.

The message fails on several counts, legally speaking:

  1. It does not indicate the address register used. This is required by Section 25 of the Personal Data Act.
  2. It was sent to severely outdated and erroneous addresses. This violates Section 9, Paragraph 2 of the Personal Data Act.
  3. It is unsolicited commercial email sent to natural persons. This violates Section 26 of the Act on the Protection of Privacy in Electronic Communications.
  4. It does not indicate a way of being removed from the list, violating Sections 26 and 27 of the Act on the Protection of Privacy in Electronic Communications.

All in all, a rather amateurish effort if you ask me.

Human-readable spam contents: None. The message has a multipart/alternative MIME content-type, but only a single “alternative” (with what?) section that is text/html. Zero plaintext content, in other words. But here’s the HTML:
