Common Good, a U.S.-based nonprofit organization that is promoting reforms to legal and governmental processes, just sent email for the first time to a spamtrap that was closed in 2004. The email refers to the owner of that spamtrap address by a plausible but incorrect name, which suggests an e-pended email address. The ESP is Blue State Digital.

Perhaps because I have a longstanding association with many non-profit and activist groups, I feel a special need to let those groups know that there is something their email marketing firms and ESPs might not be telling them: spamming can ruin your reputation among those whose support and time you want to obtain. Do you really want to loose contributions and support because you can’t be bothered to show basic courtesy and consideration in your email communications? Putting email addresses on your lists when the people who own those email addresses DID NOT ASK FOR YOUR EMAIL is rude and counterproductive.
