Finnish Ice Hockey Association / Ilves Solutions Oy ( Spamming to sell tickets to ice hockey games

The Finnish Ice Hockey Association bought a spam campaign from (Ilves Solutions Oy). As with practically any Finnish B2B spam, the stuff was seen at the addresses of some natural persons, the use of which constitutes a violation of Section 26 of the Act on the Protection of Privacy in Electronic Communications (not to mention that the processing of outdated and erroneous personal data violates Section 9, Paragraph 2 of the Personal Data Act) that have been retrieved from the Finnish Business Information System.

Unfortunately (for them :D) outsourced the sending of the campaign to SendGrid, who, as we know, don’t support spamming and actually do what they say.  I already heard back from them, saying that the sender has been suspended and is being questioned about their practices.

  1. Hello,

SendGrid has suspended this account and currently is investigating their practices and where they got their list from. We are still waiting on a response from this client. I will try to update this blog when I hear word from them.

Thanks for the report and helping our systems stay clean.

  2. Hello,

Apparently the CO of was sending on behalf of another company without understanding basic rules about opt-in. I’ve educated this sender and am pressing them for confirmation on how they obtain their recipient lists to ensure this does not happen again.

  3. Hello,

Being firm yet fair we have informed this sender that they must have permission pass to send their emails through SendGrid. We found that they were using a B2C, and somehow unaware this is illegal in Finland.

If you see further spam traps hit from this sender don’t hesitate to holler. Giving them the benefit of the doubt that they have been educated and will not repeat this behavior.

    • The spam that I saw wasn’t even B2C, but attempted to be B2B. Nonetheless, it was spam to an opt-out list that was purchased or harvested and there was nothing opt-in about it.

I will see further trap hits from this sender. I note that they sent out a “National Decisionmaker Survey” in the beginning of October, to a list that contained the same garbage as this ice hockey transmission. That wasn’t sent through SendGrid services. The only question is whether the next transmission will be. There will be more spam.

Unfortunately they don’t provide an English version of the description of their services, but if you can get somebody to translate, here are their offers for B2B spamming and spam address list sales and B2C spamming. In order for them to have an honest change of heart, they’ll need to ditch their entire business model. Likelihood of that happening? I’d say it’s about 0 to ten decimal places.
