Homedirectory, a Singapore-based web portal offering deals in home supplies and family products that is part of the Streetdirectory family, just sent their April newsletter to the administration role address for the Usenet newsgroup soc.religion.islam. Either Homedirectory or somebody else scraped this address or purchased a list, because this address does not subscribe to receive any bulk email. The ESP is Cheetahmail, a subsidiary of Experian.

This was not a spamtrap hit, but a hit on the live email address sri-admin@hrweb.org. However, I am one of the moderators of soc.religion.islam. I also own the domain at which the address is located, and am the first and only owner of the domain hrweb.org, having registered it in 1997. I created this email address specifically for users to contact the soc.religion.islam newsgroup moderators. I can state with complete confidence that there is no way whatsoever that this email address could have been acquired by this sender legitimately. It is on a great many dirty “targeted” lists, however, and receives quite a bit of spam, just not normally spam sent through legitimate ESPs.

The attached spam sample is completely unredacted, on purpose. As you may notice, the spammed email address is also present in the Reply-To header, a trick that I expect only of scumbag spammers, not otherwise legitimate companies with inappropriate email practices. Cheetahmail, please find out what your customer thinks they are doing!
