Investor’s Business Daily: For Spamtraps With IRAs?

U.S. business newsletter Investor’s Business Daily just sent an advertisement to a spamtrap that, as far as I can tell, has never existed at all. (The domain has never as best I know had a deliverable email address.) The ESP is Cheetahmail, a subsidiary of Experian.

The email address does not appear likely to have been a typo, and it isn’t one that a user might deliberately falsify to get access to a web site without providing a real email address. There isn’t much else that I can say about a single spamtrap hit; there are so many causes for bad data.

I did notice, however, that accessing the URL investors.com directly leads, not to a home page, but an annoying series of pop-up advertisements. It appears that the Investor’s Business Daily web site has come under the control of marketers from the hard sell school of marketing. :/ I think of this style of marketing as akin to force-feeding — useful (if cruel) if you want to fatten geese for fois-gras, but counterproductive if you want a long-term business relationship with the target. I’d *think* that a publisher would in fact want that sort of relationship with a subscriber.
