VistaPrint: “Everything Must Go”?

Vistaprint, which should need no introduction to anybody who hasn’t been hiding in the woods for the past decade and has email, just sent spam to a spamtrap that cannot have been live after 2006. The ESP is Cheetahmail, a subsidiary of Experian.

The spam Subject, “Everything must go …”, suggests that the spam is advertising a going-out-of-business sale for a company that has physical stock. Although I am not able to determine from the email what Vistaprint intended with this subject, the company offers printing services, not physical objects for sale. As much as many of us would love to see Vistaprint disappear from our mailboxes permanently, I don’t think that the company is in fact going out of business. I do think that, despite repeated promises to quit spamming, they’re not about to quit stuffing mailboxes full of unasked for and unwanted bulk email. :/

    • For what it’s worth, I have not seen a great deal of Vistaprint spam that was sent from their own IPs or their branded ESP IPs. Most of it is affiliate spam sent by snowshoe spammers. Apparently they are less careful in Europe, though; my colleague Atro has blogged several times about Vistaprint spam through ESPs over there.

        Thank you for this report; the reported behavior (emailing a long-dead, even if previously opted-in, address) is far from our intent and we have our analytics team engaged and looking into how it may have occurred.

        If the original reporter is willing to share the email address, and/or the S= query string parameter that will help our investigation, but I understand the possible reluctance to share the spamtrap address. The S= query string parameter ONLY identifies the campaign and isn’t in any way traceable back to a specific email address. We can at least review the selection criteria for the campaign, given only the S parameter.

        We have made, and continue to make, great efforts to ensure our promotional emails reach those opted-in customers who wish to receive them and not others.

          I have only one question for you. Does Vistaprint send, or cause to be sent, unsolicited bulk email?

          Let me clarify. Does Vistaprint send, or cause to be sent, bulk email to any addresses whose owners’ explicit consent it lacks?

          If you cannot answer with a definitive negative, and it’s abundantly clear from the evidence that you cannot, your message amounts to nothing more than a poor attempt at damage control, I’m afraid.
